Mexico Birding Tours
Summary of our birding tours to Mexico
We currently offer two complementary Mexican birding tours that combine superb birding with mouth-watering Mexican cuisine, idyllic and spectacular landscapes, and easy travel. Our flagship Southern Mexico Birding Tour targets an incredible set of birds, including Dwarf Jay, Red Warbler, and Rose-bellied Bunting, as we travel through a remarkably diverse range of ecosystems, from peaceful pine-oak forests to coastal dry-thorn scrub and lush tropical forest, while also exploring ancient Zapotec cities, awe-inspiring landscapes, and even enjoying a pelagic trip. In the Yucatán Peninsula we explore lush jungle surrounding ancient Mayan ruins, along with the beautiful beaches and wetlands of the Caribbean coast, in search of Ocellated Turkey, Cozumel Emerald, and Yucatan Amazon. Our longer Southern Mexico Birding Tour runs for thirteen days, while the Yucatán and Cozumel Peninsula extension adds six more days of exceptional birding.

Introduction to Mexico
Mexico lies at the crossroads of North and Central America, bordered to the north by the United States, to the south by Guatemala and Belize, with the Caribbean Sea to its east and the Pacific Ocean to its west. The country’s landscapes are vast and varied, stretching from high mountain ridges and volcanic peaks to coastal plains, deserts, and tropical rainforests, which promote remarkable species diversity and endemism, which you can experience on our Mexico birding tours. Rich in ancient civilization, Mexico is home to remarkable sites such as the great Mayan cities, Aztec temples, and traditional indigenous villages that preserve centuries of cultural heritage. It welcomes visitors with its vibrant traditions, colorful markets, lively music, and famously flavorful cuisine – from handmade tortillas and regional moles to fresh tropical fruits and coastal seafood. The warmth of its people, the depth of its history, and its natural beauty make travel in Mexico a truly unforgettable experience. In particular, the southern states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Yucatán have well-established tourist infrastructure, friendly local communities, and comfortable accommodations that make for a smooth and rewarding journey.
Why join Birding Ecotours in Mexico
Mexico is home to more than 1,150 bird species, including 123 endemics and many others shared only with the southern United States or neighboring Central American countries, making it a key destination for any global birder. Birdwatching here offers far more than diversity alone, with species that are often stunningly colorful, beautiful, charismatic, or with a tiny global distribution. We run our Mexican tours in February, giving us the best chance to connect with our localized targets and achieve impressive species lists, when large numbers of North American migrants winter or pass through. Our tours feature comfortable and characterful accommodations, easy travel, and a well-paced itinerary, allowing time to enjoy each region and its exceptional birds without feeling rushed.
