Guyana Birding Tours

Summary of our Guyana birding tours

Guyana is one of the world’s last untouched wildernesses, and our Guyana birding tours explore this ‘Lost World’ in search of its elusive species. We typically run a two-week tour in January/February, starting and ending in the capital, Georgetown, and exploring the rainforest from the comfort of the famous Surama Eco-Lodge and Atta Rainforest Lodge, where we may see Harpy Eagle and the near-mythical Rufous-winged Ground Cuckoo. We also venture deep into the rainforest along lengthy 4×4 roads, occasionally passing through remote Amerindian communities, as we search for the localized and Endangered (BirdLife International) Sun Parakeet and Red Siskin. Usually, we can guarantee this unforgettable tour with just one participant, and our tour price includes expensive charter flights.

Introduction to Guyana

With an area of 215,000 square kilometers (83,000 square miles) and located in the north-eastern part of South America, bordering Brazil, Venezuela, Suriname, and the Atlantic Ocean, Guyana is the third-smallest sovereign country in South America after Suriname and Uruguay. Guyana has almost 80% of its territory covered by forest and still holds some of the few remaining areas of untouched, unspoiled, primary rainforest of the entire Neotropical region. Our Guyana birding tours take you to a remote and mostly untouched part of South America where a suite of evocative bird species may be enjoyed.

Guyana birding highlights

Guyana is known among birders as a top-class birding destination containing many (47!) Guiana Shield endemics, found only in Guyana and neighboring Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname (although granted, the country has no country endemics among its 800 plus bird species). Guyana’s bird list includes some of the most sought-after and unique species in South America many of which are possible on our Guyana birding tours. Some of these specials include the likes of Harpy EagleGrey-winged TrumpeterBlack-faced HawkBlack CurassowCrimson TopazTufted CoquetteMarail GuanLittle ChachalacaCrimson FruitcrowCapuchinbirdBlack NunbirdGuianan PuffbirdGuianan TrogonGuianan ToucanetGuianan Red-necked CotingaGuianan Warbling AntwrenGuianan Streaked AntwrenGuianan Schiffornis, and with luck the seldom-seen Rufous-winged Ground Cuckoo.

Parrot lovers will greatly appreciate the fact that our Guyana birding trip offers very good chances to see species like Festive AmazonOrange-winged AmazonYellow-crowned AmazonCaica ParrotBlack-headed ParrotPainted ParakeetGolden-winged ParakeetRed-fan Parrot, and the charismatic Red-shoulderedScarletBlue-and-yellow, and Red-and-green Macaws. In addition we could encounter a number of classic South American species on our Guyana birding tours, such as HoatzinJabiruLong-winged HarrierPinnated Bittern, and White-plumed Antbird as well as gems like Scarlet IbisBlood-colored WoodpeckerWhite-bellied PiculetRufous Crab HawkWaved WoodpeckerDusky PurpletuftFerruginous-backed AntwrenSpangled and Pompadour CotingasBlack ManakinGolden-headed Manakin, and Red-and-black Grosbeak.

Guyana offers perhaps the best opportunity to see nearly all South American Nyctibiidae species in a single trip (except Common Potoo), with scarce species such as White-winged, Rufous, Long-tailed, and Great Potoo often encountered (though never guaranteed).

However, for many birdwatchers, especially avid listers, Guyana conjures up the image of two special target species, which of course we will not ignore on our trip: the most-wanted Sun Parakeet and Red Siskin, both Endangered (IUCN). We have specific territories to maximize the chance of finding both species, but it will require lengthy drives through the Guyana savannas and Rupununi grasslands, which are the habitat of Double-striped Thick-knee and Bearded Tachuri, regularly seen on our Guyana bird watching tours.

Guyana wildlife highlights

Wildlife viewing on this trip rivals the Pantanal in Brazil and remote Paraguay. Endemic primates such as Guianan Weeper CapuchinGuiana Spider MonkeyGuianan Bearded Saki, and Guianan Red Howler Monkey could be enjoyed, as well as other outstanding species like Giant AnteaterGiant OtterBlack Caiman, and with luck Puma and Jaguar.

Testimonials from our Guyana birding tours

My trip to Guyana with Birding Ecotours was only my second pure birding trip, and I could not have been more pleased. The company and our guide, Eduardo, handled all the details very professionally. We had no mishaps (which is just good luck!). I was very pleased with the variety of birds we saw, and, in particular, to our guides' focus on ensuring that each of us saw each bird. No easy task, since we had differing proficiencies. Not only was I pleased to support Birding Ecotours' mission, but I was also pleased to support the development of ecotourism in an "off the beaten path" destination, such as Guyana. I would definitely travel with Birding Ecotours, and in particular, Eduardo, again! Thanks to all for a great experience!

Holly - On Guyana - January 2024

Eduardo is still one of my favourite guides. He is knowledgeable, always kind and considerate and goes the extra mile to look after us. Our Guyana birding tour was an excellent tour with two different habitats, rain forest and savannah, giving a good selection of tropical birds. We enjoyed it immensely!

Susan - On Eduardo and Guyana - February 2024

A superb tour in a lovely friendly and relaxed country, with lovely accommodation, two brilliant guides and birding in excellent habitats; the time allocation was good and made best use of our time in the country.
